Protein Balls: The Best On-The-Go Snack
I’m a true busy-body: always on the go and don’t slow down easy! I rely on food as fuel to help me get through work days, workouts, and everyday life. It’s important to eat nutritious, whole foods that have plenty of vitamins and nutrients and that’s why protein balls are one of my favorite snacks.
Protein balls are a snack that can be nutrient dense while also tasting like a piece of candy! This recipe flavor reminds me of chocolate covered almonds or the Nature Valley protein bars that many of us know and love. However, these protein balls have a lot less sugar, sodium, and artificial flavors. Sweetened with maple syrup, these are a natural alternative to many of the protein bites or balls sold in grocery stores.
Here’s a few reasons why I love homemade protein balls:
- No baking needed! Just mix the ingredients, roll, and store in the fridge.
- Easy to customize.
- You can freeze them for up to 2 months.
- They taste incredible!
Ingredients:
- Organic Old Fashioned rolled oats: Oats are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants including Iron, B vitamins, and manganese!
- Organic chopped almonds: Almonds add the crunchy texture to these protein balls and are one of the best nuts to eat! They have plenty of fiber and protein, great for digestion and energy.
- Organic Cacao powder: Cacao powder is a health way to give food a chocolatey flavor. It has an impressive amount of protein and healthy fats that add fuel to these balls.
- Raw, natural almond butter: The glue that holds these delicious snacks together, almond butter is my favorite ingredient.
- Natural maple syrup: The best natural sweetener.
- Vanilla: An optional ingredient, but I love the added flavor.
- Organic almond milk: A splash of almond milk helps smooth out the mixture to make it easy to roll your balls.
- Mini chocolate chips: Another optional ingredient, but who doesn’t love chocolate chips!
Making Protein Balls:
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl until well combined. The mixture will stick together easily and there shouldn’t be any loose ingredients.
- Roll into balls! They can be any size you desire, but I make mine about 1 1/2″ thick.
- Store in an air tight container for 1 week or in the freezer for up to 2 months. I prefer to keep mine in the fridge because they’re so tasty cold!
And that’s it! They can be made in under 10 minutes and once you know how to make them, the second time will take only 5.
