A Must-Have Wholesome Winter Meal!
Are you ready to try the easiest, tastiest homemade winter meal? Because this turkey chili is just what you need! It’s a soul warming, heartwarming recipe that will keep you full and keep you cozy.
Chili is one of those foods that is hard to find sulfite free. Many times the tomatoes (and sometimes beans) in the mix will have citric acid, vinegar, or other ingredients that aren’t the safest for sulfite allergies. Chili is also a heavily spiced food and many spices can contain sulfites. While some people can tolerate a potentially low sulfite exposure, turkey chili is something I’d much rather make at home. And to be honest, it tastes better than any chili I’ve had outside of the home!
My mom has become quite the sulfite free cook and this is one of her original homemade recipes. It’s a one of a kind chili that I’d recommend to anyone out there. The simple ingredients and easy prep have won me over! My family and I enjoy it best with some tortilla chips and sour cream, but weirdly enough it even goes great with mashed potatoes (trust me on this one). This is a recipe for the whole family and that’s exactly what was in mind when it was whipped up by mom!
Ingredients
*Reminder- I personally always buy mostly organic ingredients. In this recipe I use regular ground turkey from Costco (linked below).
- Ground turkey
- Bell pepper
- Red onion
- Diced tomatoes
- Black beans
- Kidney beans
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Sea salt
- Chili powder
- Onion powder
- Jalapenos (Optional)
Making the Turkey Chili
There are two parts to making the turkey chili and it’s best made using a crockpot. First you want to start by browning the peppers, onions, and ground turkey in a pan on the stove. Preheat a pan over low heat with the extra virgin olive oil and chop the pepper and onion into small pieces. Once the pan is warm, add them into the olive oil and mix well (if using jalapenos, add these in as well). When sizzling, add in the ground turkey and the sea salt, onion, and chili powder. Mix well and cook for around 10 minutes or until brown.
While the turkey is cooking, turn the crockpot on high and add in the diced tomatoes, black beans and kidney beans. Once the turkey mix is brown, add it into the crockpot and mix well. Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6 hours. Serve warm and enjoy with a side of tortilla chips, fresh bread, sour cream, guacamole, or anything you enjoy best!

Sulfite Free Turkey Chili
Equipment
- Crockpot
Ingredients
Stovetop
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 1 bell pepper chopped
- 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup red onion chopped
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
Crockpot
- 2 15oz diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup black beans
- 1/2 cup kidney beans
Optional
- 1/2 tsp chipotle powder
- 1 tbsp chopped jalapeno
Instructions
Stovetop
- Start by placing a pan on the stovetop on low. While it's heating, chop up the bell pepper and onions into small pieces. Once warm, add in the olive oil, peppers and onions and combine until well mixed.
- When the pepper and onion mix begins to sizzle, add in the ground turkey. Slowly mix the ingredients then add the sea salt, onion and chili powder. Cook for around 10 minutes on medium heat or until the turkey begins to brown.
Crockpot
- While the turkey mix is cooking, turn the crockpot on high. Add in the diced tomatoes and beans.
- Once the turkey, pepper and onion mix has cooked, add it into the crockpot and combine with the tomatoes and beans. Add any additional desired ingredients and stir well.
- Let the chili cook for 4 hours on high heat or 6 hours on low heat while occasionally stirring. Once the chili has cooked for the specified amount of time, serve and enjoy!
Notes
- The exact amount of tomato mix may vary depending on type/brand. For example if you’re using crushed tomatoes you may need a bit less.
- You can use either all kidney beans or all black beans if desired.
- Jalapeno, onion, peppers, and other add-ins can be changed! Whatever your personal preference may be, the recipe is forgiving.
- If you don’t have a crockpot, you should be able to cook it on low heat on the stove top stirring occasionally.
